Located just a couple of hours from Nashville, this is the perfect drive to take to get away from it all. Since the Great Smoky Mountains are at a lower elevation, you’ll want to visit this location a little later in the year than the rest. The season tends to be from mid-October through early November in most parts of the area. This is also a great place to visit because you have so many unique places, such as Gatlinburg, nearby that you can also visit!

Following a brisk 2 ½ hour drive north on I-35 from Minneapolis, you will find the gorgeous North Shore of Lake Superior as you make your way through the city of Duluth–another tourist hotspot. The maple trees begin to turn during the end of September along the shore, which means that planning a trip between late September and the middle of October will promise amazing scenery. The drive from Duluth to Lutsen during this time of year is breathtaking. A couple of the most popular spots along the North Shore are Split Rock Lighthouse and nearby Gooseberry Falls State Park. Hiking along the winding waterway and waterfalls while being surrounded by brightly colored leaves is a real treat!

  1. kagould17 – Not much to tell. After working for 3 companies over 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I had waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 7+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wants has been very fulfilling. Early on, there was a long list of projects in my “to-do” hopper and I attacked these projects with a vengeance for the first 9 months of retirement. Eventually, my brain told me that this was not what retirement was about, so it took me another 5 months before my industriousness again took over and I attacked another line of projects, this time somewhat shorter and less complicated, as well as many new projects related to the family weddings in 2016. After going hard for 6 weeks and 3 weddings, my body was telling me to relax, then the flu bug hit and as soon as that was done with me, my sciatic acted up. No rest for the wicked. In 2020 and 2021, the Covid 19 pandemic changed the whole retirement gig. I was lucky to not be still working, for sure. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may never become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

Much as we mourn the end of summer, it is tough to beat the beauty of fall. Allan

  2. Grandma's Ramblings – As a pastor’s wife for years I have shared God’s Word to all ages from young children to adults, led women’s retreats and mentored young women. In my “golden years” of retirement as I am no longer able to do all those things, I still want to help others. With my blog Grandma’s Ramblings I hope to challenge, encourage or just give someone a laugh. I have worn many titles in my life: daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, wife. I have fought a battle with breast cancer, became a widow with two small girls at 34. Blessed with a second chance at happiness when I married again I gained four more children. Together my husband and I have six children, 20 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. If you like my blog, I hope you will share it with others
