A Drive Through Monument Valley

Located along the Arizona-Utah border you will find the breathtaking Monument Valley. Featured in many movies over the years, you’ve likely seen the iconic scenery at some point or another. Seeing it in person is even better than you can imagine.

Although commonly thought of as a national park, Monument Valley is actually part of the Navajo Nation. (Your National Park Pass will not be accepted here!) This area is known as Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii in Navajo, which means “Valley of the Rocks.” Some families still live here, with no access to electricity or running water.

You can take one of the tours offered here, or you can take the route that we opted for and drive yourself around the 17 mile loop and take a self guided tour. The grated dirt roads provide a fun and unique way to get around the park. Plenty of pull off areas are provided for when you want to get out, stretch your legs, and snap a few stunning photos.

Some of the dirt/sand can get a little thick at times, so we were happy to have rented a small SUV. Don’t let that stop you from giving it a try, as we saw many small cars that were making their way through the terrain as well.

There are several hiking trails you can take advantage of during your visit, with difficulties ranging from easy to strenuous. If you want to feel like you are in a Western movie, you can take advantage of the horseback riding that is offered by the Navajos.

Monument Valley does have a fairly early closing time for the park, so be sure to do your research before you make the drive out there!

I would recommend this geologically fascinating trip to anyone. It is a truly unique destination and you can help to support the Navajo Nation.

On my bucket list for sure! I think it would really help if your post included a map – or even just a link to one. We have visited the Grand Canyon and Mesa Verde which actually bracket this site. Somehow we missed out both times, but then you cannot see everything!

  2. roninjax – Florida, U.S.A. – Throughout all my years of work in various positions it seems like I've mostly enjoyed sharing my thoughts on paper and through speaking engagements, informing and encouraging. I desire to do my part in sharing and currently feel the need to focus on travel-related subjects as well as life experiences. I look forward to our journeys together, around the world.

Maybe I’ll get out there this year or next. Excellent insight through the beautiful photos and write-up.

  3. Such a fun place to drive! And the scenery is jaw-dropping. I did not know the Navajo name – beautiful.

  4. Sheree – Cote d'Azur – I'm a sports mad Englishwoman, now living (thank goodness) in France, who developed a passion for cycling rather late on in life. I started the blog to keep my friends and family up-to-date with my adventures on two wheels, my recipes, my travels and my wonderful life in France. The title of my blog refers to when I first started cycling with my local club. I was always at the back of the bunch, until I slid off it on the first incline! On short climbs I could always catch back up on the ascent but on long climbs......I just used to bid them farewell and continue at my own speed. My cycling’s now much improved but I still get dropped!

I haven’t been here since I was probably 5 or younger! I’d love to go back here as I don’t remember much at all, and I’d love to have some photos of it to remember it through. It looks so stunning!

  6. Grandma's Ramblings – As a pastor’s wife for years I have shared God’s Word to all ages from young children to adults, led women’s retreats and mentored young women. In my “golden years” of retirement as I am no longer able to do all those things, I still want to help others. With my blog Grandma’s Ramblings I hope to challenge, encourage or just give someone a laugh. I have worn many titles in my life: daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, wife. I have fought a battle with breast cancer, became a widow with two small girls at 34. Blessed with a second chance at happiness when I married again I gained four more children. Together my husband and I have six children, 20 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. If you like my blog, I hope you will share it with others

  8. thedislocatedhippies – SE Asia – Kristen and Billy sprang from the loins of 4 heroic ancestors. They roamed the Earth for an Age, playing the zither, predicting earthquakes, calling bingo games, eating sponge cakes, and watching old movies on tv. They was schooled by the Dominicans and the Christian Brothers, what taught them their letters and scribbling skills. So, rudely equipped, and with a missal full of hymns in their hearts they stepped forth into the world. Kristen and Billy tried to keep the hippy flame alive as they strove and stumbled through work, like Kane from Kung-Fu crossed with Pollyanna, finding both good and evil in the hearts of men, ( but mainly good). They filled out time sheets and instead of villains punched the clock over and over (and over) again. Finally, the dark clouds parted, the sun shone through, and they stopped punching and started living. Now they are wide eyed, clickety hipped, post career dislocated hippies looking to get lost in a big wide world.

Great blog voyages. John Ford and John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara and Ward Bond will never die.
