The Perfect Family Beach Getaway: Villefranche-Sur-Mer, France

A week on a beautiful white beach is the perfect holiday for the whole family. If you’re living in the UK, France is one of the cheapest places to find a great beach to relax on. If you’re like me and live in the US, it is a place that is most definitely still worth the visit! The South of France has so many amazing beach resorts to choose from. One of the best ones is Villefranche-Sur-Mer, here are some of the amazing things you’ll find out there.

Luxury Accommodation

The South of France, in general, is a region best known for being home to some very wealthy people, some of them even being celebrities. Everywhere you look you’ll find luxury, and Villefranche is no exception. There are loads of great Villefranche apartments where you can relax in style by the pool and enjoy amazing views from the balcony. Unlike a lot of the other resorts in the area, a lot of the traditional buildings and streets remain here.

The Beach

The beach is the main attraction in the area and it draws a lot of tourism every year. It’s a pebble beach, not sand, but it’s still comfortable to relax on and a lot of beach goers prefer it to the rockier beach you can find in Nice, just down the road. The beach at Villefranche is also a hotspot for watersports, where you’ll find plenty of swimmers and paddle boarders out there all day long. The beach is also perfectly set up for families because the sand slopes gently toward the sea, so it’s safe for the kids to play in the shallow waters.

Old Town

Head down to the old town and you’ll find a typical French town, untouched by any of the modern luxuries that have since been brought to the area. You can enjoy an afternoon getting lost in the maze of winding cobbled streets and visit the Dark Street, a secret passageway under the houses at the front of the harbor. There are some great little traditional cafes you can stop for a coffee in on your way around as well.

Saint Elme Citadel

When you’re exploring the old town, make sure not to miss the Saint Elme Citadel. This historical stone fortress from the 16th century is home to the town hall, 4 amazing museums, an open air theater and some beautiful gardens. You can easily spend a day or two looking around and the best thing is, it’s all completely free to enter. The old maritime museum is a highlight, housing collections of some interesting historical artifacts.

Markets

Villefranche-Sur-Mer has a big port and all of those ships coming in bring loads of great produce with them. You can find it all at one of the incredible local markets that they hold there. Between May and October, markets with hundreds of stalls sell everything from locally crafted clothing and jewelry to fresh fruit, vegetables, and seafood. It’s the best place to get all of your souvenirs and some great food while you have a great day out.
Villefranche-Sur-Mer is a great place to go if you want a fun filled, cultural beach holiday that the whole family will enjoy.

  1. We spent part of a day here in May 2017. We have to agree, it is a great place to explore with historic back lanes and shops as well as the old fort and the promenade along the ocean.

  2. You’re correct, it’s a lovely spot but surely it’s worth mentioning its proximity to Nice, the nearby Villa and Gardens of Ephrussi de Rothschild and how easy it is to get around on the train so that you can visit other locations along the coast such as Eze, Beaulieu sur Mer, Monaco, Antibes…..or is all that in the next post?
