On our last full day in New York, we finally took the subway for the first time! I had never been on a subway, so I was not totally sure how it worked.
We walked down the stairs and there was a kiosk with instructions. Easy enough, right? Well while we were trying to figure it out, a guy walked up to us asking if we just needed a one time ticket. We said yes, and it offered us entrance for $1.50 less than the actual cost. We were basically just like “yeah, ok.” After he let us in, he even gave us directions. That was definitely against the rules, but it was our first time using the subway so I didn’t feel too awful about it.
I actually really enjoyed taking the subway. It was so cheap, fast and easy. The next time I go back it will definitely be my main transportation.
Later, we took the train over to Brooklyn so that we could go to the Bagel Store. If you haven’t heard of it, they are famous for their rainbow bagels. We went a little later in the day, so they didn’t have a full menu available. My husband got a cotton candy bagel with rainbow cream cheese and I got a french toast bagel with regular cream cheese.
These things were both huge and absolutely amazing. I will definitely be getting the rainbow cream cheese next time. Definitely worth the stop.
We then headed back to the city. We were going to a concert at Webster Hall called the “Champagne Jam” so we decided to head over to that area. There were three stages with bands playing at all three. We were mainly there to see the headliner, The Front Bottoms.
It was such a good time. They even had a free photo booth set up that we took advantage of. Going to another Champagne Jam again one year is something I will consider for sure.
We got back to our Airbnb kind of late that evening and packed everything up to leave in the morning. I always try to leave the Airbnb’s I stay in in the best possible shape. I would want someone to do the same for my house after all.
Since we were not in a huge hurry and since we were driving through anyway, we took a detour and stopped in Hershey, PA.
They have detailed tours that you can pay for, but they also have a small free tour that we went on. It was pretty interesting. Plus if you are a chocolate fan, they have pretty much anything you could want there.
After our detour, we continued our way back home. I am glad to have spent a few days exploring New York and I know now that I definitely want to go back.

The subway isn’t as scary as people make it out to be. Just remember to study your subway map BEFORE you go somewhere and sit in the conductor ‘ s car. He or she can give you directions . You’re very lucky there weren’t any transit police around when the gentleman offered you the single ride pass. Dude was trying to make some money off tourists who don’t know the ins and outs of riding the subway.
Oh most definitely! We were so confused initially and that was for sure a one off thing. After our first time we did just what you said and looked at the map before we went and got a temporary metro pass. It’s really not too bad at all. Thanks for your comment!
I love all the abundance of good food in NYC 🙂 there’s so many options and you can never run out of new things to try…yum! That cotton candy bagel being one of them!
